Reminders
  • Kindly remember to fill out the parent contact form
  • Kindly remember to sign the photography permission slip
  •  I am in room 213 for Parent-Teacher Conferences on November 16th from 1:00-2:30 pm 
ENL Skills:  Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing will be taught throughout the year
 
Some Listening Skills
  • Face (look at) the speaker –student or teacher
  • Maintain (keep) eye contact
  • Pay attention
  • Listen to the words and try to create a picture in your mind about what the speaker is saying
Please try not to interrupt the speaker 
Some Speaking Skills
  • Respond to questions/answer questions from another student or from the teacher
  • Turn and talk with a partner about the lesson
  • Have a conversation –I agree/I disagree because… I know this because… 
  • Task cards:  Good to go, Getting There, All Done, I'm Stuck/Need Help (These cards are helpful for assessments, lessons, and activities). 
Some Reading Skills
  • Identify letters and sounds
  • Decode/read words and sentences
  • Comprehend/understand what you are reading
  • Use pictures to help you understand the story
  • Identify high frequency words/basic sight words
  • Vocabulary-understand and use in context of the book or reading passage; synonyms-words that mean the same, definitions of vocabulary words
  • Make text-to-self connections
  • Many skills and strategies will be taught throughout the year
 
Some Writing Skills
  • Write letters and words, write complete sentences
  • Capital letters at the beginning of each sentence, punctuation at the end of each sentence
  • Proper spacing between words
  • Paragraphs depending on grade level
  • Write a narrative:  use sequence and transitional words such as First, Next, Then, In addition, Finally
  • There are many writing skills and strategies
  • Writing process-pre-writing, draft, revise, edit, publish

Classes 304, 305, and 406 worked on the beginning of year writing assessments. A rubric went along with this to see what their strengths are and what they need to work on: "Glow and Grow"

Students brainstormed ideas for "All About Me." They filled out the graphic organizer on the chart paper. Then they did an activity.

Students worked on a bulletin board project called, "All About Me." After brainstorming topics they can write about, they used differentiated templates to display their work.
